He doesnt really know me right now, although he has acknowledged me at school a few times. Im leaving school soon and hopefully starting university next year so i would like to get to know him before i leave. Does any one have any tips on relaxed, chatty conversation starters that someone shy can try out ?

How about "I fancy the pants off you - what do you think to that?" or "Can I buy you a bag of chips?" or something similar.

Well asking for a guys number can be a really hard thing to do when your really shy.
So heres my suggestion;
Find out what he is interested in, if you see him at break/lunch/class sit near him and cassualy bring up a conversation about his interests i.e music/sports/school etc.
once you get the wee conversations going it shold be easier. Then once youve talked to him once or twice ask for his MSN/email or his number.
I hope things work out for you Good Luck!X

Perhaps try and find out what classes he's really good in. If you have any exams coming up, you could approach him and ask him for a little tuition to go over the subjects that aren't your strongest, saying that you need to go over what you learnt last year (his year). He may be flattered that you asked and it would be the ideal conversation started. Even if he says no, you should be able to find conversation from there.

Ask him one day for his number or get one of your friends to ask him. Then start texting him or even give him your number to see if hes interested. When he texts or you text just ask hin questions like what music and general things he likes to do ect. I'm sure you will be able to chat once you start it's just the first words that are a bit nervy.
Good luck.
