writes: Hello there, I suppose this question is a little different, but I'm still looking for advice/help. Also, I'd like to think this could be a little fun, and be a little more light than some of the topics discussed on the forum. Briefly, since finishing university this summer I haven't been able to find a job in my chosen career, film and television, and it's doing my head in I don't know what more I can do other than do it myself; getting myself noticed and making myself more employable. So, I'm putting together a showreel of the work I have done so far, but a lot of it doesn't work well in a showreel. I've got a small local production company on board to assist and I'm going to be making a few short (very short) films to add to my showreel which be challenging, different and demonstrate creativity. The problem I have is I'm not a writer, writing doesn't appeal to me I just want to direct, but I don't have anything to direct. I was wondering if people could help me with ideas/concepts for a short film that would be feasable. Thanks so much in advance, I hope you can inspire me.

I've been in the business since 1980 making a living at it. You can get lots of free exposure, sure, but that's not worth anything in the market. What is worth something? Selling your work. Being able to point to a track record so you can increasingly make more money with each project. Work you give away is worth exactly what the takee pays for it - nothing. Also to this director the original poster, don't give your work away for free either. Same advice goes for you. It's worth what someone pays for it. Enough said.

StevenRoss is verified as being by the original poster of the questionThanks for the ideas guys, keep them coming.
In responce to the anonymous post I am not expecting anyone to do the work for me, this is more like a brainstorming session which I decided to post on here rather than writing/filmmaking sites hoping to get a different insight.
"Writers who can sell their work get paid" - the lucky ones do, and the reason I'm not looking to pay a writer is I can't afford to. I'm looking for people like myself who are beginning a career in film/television, who are a passionate and have a vision. Who realise that by allowing me to direct their work they are gettin exposure, in the same way they are doing me a favour.

How about something based on this site or sites similar. This site gets a lot of traffic. Call it something like "Modern Day Therapy" or Non-traditional Therapy in the Digital Age" The possibilites are vast in regards to websites that offer support to people.
Plus, people who offer free support will probably offer free input as well.

Admirable idea, but real writers who can sell their work get paid. If this is a job posting, please let us know how much you are willing to pay.

I can understand the frustration of not being able to find a job in this current economic climate but its good to see you have not let this hinder you in focusing on your passion which is directing!
I also studied a media degree and finding work in this area is challenging. You might want to consider freelance work or volunteering (you wont get paid) but the experience is invaluable try

To direct a masterpiece really depends if your heart is truly into the subject your directing.
As for ideas on a short film -Why not consider doing a mini documentary about a (certain) group in your community living in modern day Britain.
You may not be a writer but I am sure you can brainstorm ideas around an idea like this and get your friends to volunteer and help you.
Hope this answers your question & good luck!
