I've travelled on the domestic sector in US and despite having pierced ears, belly-button, eyebrow and vagina, haven't set the detectors off, so you should be fine.

It shouldn't go off, I used to wear metal tunnels in my ear, at at 6mm it was more metal than a tiny ring so don't worry about it. I never beeped going through security because of it. ^^

It won't beep once you pass through. I have a lip piercing, a nose piercing, a belly button piercing and my ears pierced, and I didn't have to take them out when I passed through any metal detectors. Neither did any of my buddies who have piercings when they went through the detectors.Don't sweat it! Have fun :)-The Resident Metalhead

Maybe make sure to get a bit ahead of him through the check in or after him, so that he wont be right next to you in case it beeps off? Then maybe he wont be able to see where the officers have found something....?
Or, think of it this way: he would surely be surprised!
