Yes, you sqeeze the muscle, hold it, then release. You arent going to "find" the muscle, it is more of feeling the muscle. You can do this with out being erect as well.
Try doing the same thing as if you were to stop urination but when you are not urinating. You shouldn't be squeezing your butt or poking your finger in there either!
When doing the towel thing, you squeeze the muscle, release, squeeze, release. Its really quiete simple!
Im not sure how guys feel it but I figure it is pretty much the same as girls.
