Dont wait it's hard to find a studio if you between 18 and 20 too old to take recreational or competetive too young to take adult. DEFINATELY TRY.
At our studio we wear cutoff tight wich are just styrrup tights but we cut off the styrrup in tan "booty" short which are tight short dance shorts sometimes a leotard and a shirt but if your just tapping jazz pants and a shirt are fine. when starting i suggest making sure you get a pair without a heel and not patten leather. My all time favorite tap shoes are leos lace up split sole a bit pricey but will last you a life time hope i could help good luck !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think it's funny, it's normal. I did tap dancing for years but work got too much and I couldn't juggle both, it's the one thing I regret most, not keeping it up. Although you will need the support of people at home such as your bf and mates to help you get started. It might be different but when I started we all wore the same 'uniform' type thing a leotard and a purple skirt with long socks (embarrassing pictures looking back but I enjoyed every minute!) Obviously you won't be in the same outfit but it's most likely there will be a certain dress code. If it's something you're dedicated to and are willing to keep up then I'd advise it to anyone. You feel better for it and notice the change in your legs! It's your life and your time, don't let others reactions stop you. Hope it all goes well! xxx

Hon you are a good age to start! Having the ambition to want to learn is a great. Heck I learned to square dance when I was 21 and now at 52 I CLOG! The thing is I didn't get to take lessons I just watched some folks do it years ago. One night I was out singing and somebody sang the song about Cumberland Road and up I jumped and started clogging. Two other gals were out there with me and both in their 20's , who had taken the classes, who CLOGGED were mesmerized watching me do it. They had no idea I could. When they found out I never took lessons they were amazed.
Set your mind to it hon, have fun and do your best. It's great exercise, you meet lots of people doing these type things. Don't let anyone make you feel like you can't do it. There are alot of people who made a great living doing tap dancing and such. Gregory Hines, Debbie Reynolds, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire and many more!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~JUST DO IT!! NO ONE IS TRUELY EVER A FAILURE UNLESS THEY NEVER REALLY TRY!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
God bless,
i think it is great that you want to start up tap dancing. you are never too old to learn something new. i started salsa the other year and i am 22. ignore your brother and boyfriend, they are guys after all and don;t always understand things like dance. god knows why. but then i have a friend who teaches tap and other dance and he is amazing. yet he is not embarrassed by his talent. what he can do is very good.
the best thing to do is to find where they teach it in your area and then go along to a beginners lesson, usually at dance places you wear black. but some places are different. they may give you instructions on what to wear before you join or when you get there. you normally have to buy your own tap shoes, you can get them from any dance shops. fittings are very important so don;t get them off the net. enjoy!
