I'm going on holiday in August, and I'm starting to excersise a bit more now. I go out for a mile run twice a week, and eat relatively healthily, eating chocolate about twice a week.

I'm 5'7'' now, and want to get down to 8 stone by august. I'm currently 9 1/2. How long do you think it will take me to do this? And am I doing enough?

Hi there, why do you want to be 8 stone? I am 5.7 and nine and a half stone. My bmi is 21 and I take a size eight. If you were 8 stone (and I was a year ago when I was ill) I looked skeletal! You would be way below the bmi for your height and it is so unhealthy - aim to lose no more than 7lbs and get toned, that's my advice. Good luck!

hi. i understand your problem as i am 12 years old and feel heavier than some of my friends. one thing to not worry bout is if your going on holiday it is because you want to have fun. anyway, you are doing a good job. with the exercise you could stop the 2 miles a week and start by doing (maybe) 30 minutes of jogging or cycling a day-much better than just twice a week. also you don't want to go on a big diet as you are still young, so maybe just eat a bit healthier and you should be fine. please don't think what others do- dieting means you can't have any chocolate crisps or anything unhealthy. THAT is un healthy, so you can have maybe one choc or packet of crisps aday but mainly focus on the healthy side like, fruit and veg and water and oj and aj. ok good luck . : ) xxx

as a physical training instructor myself, i could probably introduce you to a long, scientific, and presise list of things to do to guarantee losing 1.5 stone by august. BUT, they are boring and too easy to deviate from aren't they. a few simple things that you could do though are; upping your one mile run to a two mile run three times a week instead of twice, DON'T smoke, make sure you are getting your five fruit'n'veg a day, and fast food is a big NONO.

also, chocolate is okay occasionally but make sure that you are not eating it before you are running. you want to make sure that you are burning fat, not the energy consumed in the chocolate just eaten. to be honest, your routine now is not too bad at all for someone who just wants to lose a bit of weight. just a tiny little bit more and i would be pretty sure that you will have lost the weight easily by august.

i hope this helps and good luck

regards

D

A male reader, maxsteel86 United Kingdom +, writes (26 January 2007):

maxsteel86 agony auntI dont know much about the diet thing but I do run a lot. I find I can eat whatever I feel like so long as I run about 3 miles a day, 4 days a week:-) if you follow that, you'll grow to enjoy running and be able to eat all the 'junk' foods around you;-) (still has a limit! lol)

and I'm pretty sure you can lose the weight in like 4-5 months, no problem, especially since you'll be on a healthy diet.

To begin with, stick to a speed you're comfortable with and as you get better, push to go faster so that you can maintain a higher speed for longer. And let me congratulate you on picking a kick ass exercise;-) hope you stick with it even after you reach your goal!!

Ask and you shall receive..(well,ill try my best) agony auntI study p.e.and home economics and from what iv learnt you'r definitely on the right track!

People in general are Supposed to do 1/2 an hr.of exercise everyday. So,i suggest you progress your exercising.

Running is very good!but you can also try som simple exercises at home ex.a few sit-ups for 15mins befor u go to bed, running stairs after you wake up etc. You'll see great results in a matter of weeks or less!

Now as far as your slimming diet goes, try getting into the habbit of eating vegetables and wholegrain cereals/bars as snacks etc.they're very filling and delicious! Hope i'v been of some help,Goodluck!

A male reader, childof1981 United States +, writes (26 January 2007):

childof1981 agony auntIf you want to loose that amount of weight by August you will need to expend about 390 more Calories than you take in every day.

So you need to do the following.

1. Tally up how many calories you consume every day.

2. Tally up what your activity levels and basic metabolic rate are consuming every day.

With a combination of decreasing #1 and increasing #2, you want the gap to equal approximately 390 Calories.

You can have good or bad days with that gap, as long as you average about 390 Calories per day over time.
