Well the best way to prevent any accidents is to use 2 forms of contraception - birth control AND condoms. Birth control (like the pill) you need to visit your doctor and get hold of it, they will advise you on what will suit you best. For example, the pill is the most common form of birth control and is about 99% effective. But you have to take it every day for 21 days, at the same time etc. If you forget your pill, or say are ill and throw up - this reduces the effectiveness of the pill. So if you think you are quite forgetful and might struggle with the pill, then there are alternatives like the injection. It is the same hormones as the pill, and is again about 99% effetive at preventing pregnancy. But you only need 1 injection every 3 months, you get this from the doctors and it covers you for that whole time - nice and easy!
Birth control is very effective, and very rarely fails. So definintely go to your doctors and sort this out, the sooner you get on it the sooner it will integrate into your system and have you covered (it doesnt work right away, the pill takes about 1 week to fully protect you).
And then as a protection against STD's and another barrier against pregnancy - use a condom. You can get these for free from the doctors when you go get your birth control, or you can buy them in supermarkets and chemists. Condoms are about 97% effective, and if you put them on correctly then they rarely break.
So if you use both types of contraception I will put money on it that you will be fine and nothing will go wrong. I have been on the pill since I was 16 (I am 23) and have never had any problems - it has always worked, I have never been pregnant, I have never even had a pregnancy scare! My period was 2 days late once but that was about the most dramatic thing to happen. And now I have been with my current partner for over a year, we havent been using condoms for a while so even the pill alone works fine.
But in your case, use a condom and birth control just to give you peace of mind. And I promise, it will be fine. Millions of people are on the pill and using condoms, if you use them correctly then nothing will go wrong and they are incredibly effective.
I hope this helps and good luck!
