If you were fine with just being friends, you asking him where you two stand told him you are not SURE. That means, either you are under the impression HE wants more, or YOU want more - neither of which he wants.
He is going to have a hard time wanting to deal with any of that, so leave him alone and see if he contacts you.

Don't be too pushy when it comes to being his friend. Give it some time, I'm talking a month or 2 before you contact him again. Now's not the time to suggest a friendship.
