I feel like I get pushed around by friends and listen to everything they tell me to do. I want to show them that I am in control but at the same time I want them to like me for who I am. How do I do this?

Well, darlin? Don't be so apt to pleasing everyone else in your life, if you start this habit early, in about 5-10 years you'll be sorry. You attending college for you, Im assuming. Why are you so concerned about eveyone else?
First off, i will tell you not to get mixed up trying to do the wrong things to impress others and get attention i.e; being overly sexually active with more than one partner, experimenting drugs due to peer pressure, I wouldn't want you harmed because you feel left out because trust me honey, there's some mean people out there.
Second, stand out by doing something your good at, something you like-something you love. Babe, coming from experience they notice talent more than needyness. Im an Artist, and trust me I've been called worse. I used to be quite and nobody, but then my talent got discovered and now I have certificates hanging on my wall? And do i care who else see's them? No, I care about my own satisfaction and gratification.
Babe, you're going to meet alot of people in your life and college is only a mere portion of it. Be your own person, and don't let anyone talk you out of being you. Life is not about finding ourselves it's about creating ourselves, once you are able to realize that, ambrace what you feel, not what others want you to feel. Shine for the right reasons and you'll get more pride in yourself and from others.
Good luck and best wishes my dear,
-and remember, respect is earned by those willing to truly give it and by doing respectful things.
