A problem not too far removed from my own. I have fallen for my female best friend but I know if I tell her, the friendship will be over as another male friend did this and she just couldn't cope with it and shut him out. I'm not sure I could bear that.
I suspect you've probably got to give him a little space and see if he can adjust or cope with this. Hopefully, after a while of being upset or working out his feelings, he may start getting back in touch with you to at least resume some sort of friendship. It may not be anything more and then it'll be up to you to see if you can cope with being just friends.
I do think it's a shame this happens so often. It wouldn't bother me in the least. If I didn't feel the same, I would simply say I was terribly flattered but wanted things to stay as they were. But I guess we don't all handle things the same way.
