I think I have a phobia against vomit?

Question - (27 January 2014) 5 Answers - (Newest, 28 January 2014)
A female United Kingdom age 26-29, anonymous writes:

This weekend me and my boyfriend went to a party and stayed in a hotel. He had quite a bit to drink and as a result of this, threw it all back up when we got back to our room. ( I know this information isn't lovely but there is a point )

I think I have a phobia of vomit. I really wanted to see if he was okay as everyone wants someone there however I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Instead, I shoved the duvet over my head and put my fingers in my ears to block it out. It was a horrible experience as I now feel really guilty, the day after he had a hangover and kept saying he felt sick. Again, I really wanted to cuddle him all day and look after him I just couldn't bring myself to do so in case he was.

I feel so guilty and awful.

Any help or advice on how to overcome this?

And make it up to my boyfriend? Maybe treat him to something?

CindyCares agony auntWhy do you have to make up to him ? If any , he is the one who should make it up to you for being a grown man that does not know his drinking limits and for having spoiled a romantic evening by puking all over the place.

If he had been stricken by sudden illness , he had been poisoned or something , then it's different , I guess you should have overcome your natural revulsion to assist him- at least until to the arrival of parameducs. And I think you WOULD have done it, and you would not just have let him, say, choke in his vomit, there's nothing like an emergency , a real emergency, to help us overcome our limitations, queasiness etc

But, he gorges himself with booze ( or with food, it would be the same ) ... and you feel guilty because you prefer not to play Florence Nightingale at his bedside and no t to risk to be piked all over ?: Absurd. It was ust an indigestion, he can handle it on his own.

As for vomit not being anything to be asamed of, as M. Proops says, yes, sure - but what has this got to do with anything ?

Mentrual blood too is nothing to be ashamed of, is the product of a healthy and natural process. Nevertheless women don't go around dangling their used sanitary napkins under people's noses. Least of all their boyfriends.

llifton agony auntDefinitely not everyone wants someone there when they are puking. I would insist the person leave if they tried to be there while I puked. No way am I letting anyone watch that.

You have nothing to feel bad about and nothing to make up for. Your boyfriend is a big boy. He decided to drink too much, so it was his problem he threw up. Now if he had alcohol poisoning and you left him there, then I'd say that was a different story. But who likes vomit?

I'd say you don't have a phobia. A phobia is debilitating. You just simply are grossed out by it and don't like it. Not unusual considering it's the emptying of ones stomach contents. It's not like you're supposed to be thrilled by it.

Anyway, don't worry about it. And if your boyfriend is upset you weren't there to rub his back while he threw up, he's being a big baby.

vomiting can be unpleasant for a lot of people.I've only done it about three times in my life due to illnesses. It's the body's way of getting rid of toxins and is quite effective and nothing to be ashamed of.

person12345 agony auntYou have something called emetophobia. It's a difficult one to overcome but can be done. You will have to find a good therapist who specializes in anxiety disorders and most people with that phobia also find adding in medications like Prozac or Paxil to be extremely helpful.

This website is centered around it as well.

A female reader, Honeypie United States +, writes (27 January 2014):

Honeypie agony auntI can't handle people puking. AT ALL. Whether it's my kids, my husband, total stranger, person on TV - it makes me either sick to my stomach or vomit myself.

I can handle snot, pee, poo, blood, dirt but not puke.

Thankfully my husband handles it well. I HAVE had to take care of puking kids while my husband was deployed - there was no other choice really. So I know I CAN do it ( I just had to run and puke a few times myself.)

Accept that you have certain limits. Some people can't stand the sight of blood.

Just explain it to him.

No need to feel shame.
