How was your GP not helpful? Did he simply tell you that there was nothing to worry about or did he give you a treatment that didn't work? If you tried a treatment that didn't work I strongly advise that you go back to him/her and explain that you are still having the same problem. If you don't go back to the doctor, he/she will assume that everything's okay now.
I'm inclined to agree with the other aunts and say it sounds like thrush (also called candida or a yeast infection). This causes thick white lumpy discharge which smells "yeasty" and usually causes intense itching. The treatment is usually with a cream and a pessary (Canestan) which can be got from all pharmacies and some larger supermarkets. (Read the instructions carefully before you use it) Resistant thrush often needs to be treated with a one-off dose of "flucanazole" - a tablet that is available without a prescription from a pharmacist.
It could also be bacterial vaginosis which needs to be treated with antibiotics from the G.P.
Neither thrush and bacterial vaginosis are a result of poor hygiene. In fact over-washing can make things worse. Avoid very hot baths, scented bubble baths or soaps and wear cotton knickers.
Sorry, if I've just told you a load of things that you already know but I do think you should go back to the doctor. If the doctor remains unhelpful, try booking yourself in at the nearest genito-urinary medicine (GUM) clinic for a full screening and explain your symptoms - they may be able to try a slightly treatment than stuff your G.P already tried. You can find your nearest GUM clinic by googling it with the name of you local area.
Hope things are okay.

"Aunt Sal" may be correct, possibly what we call a yeast infection in the U.S.A. If such is the prob, consider taking some reliable probiotics and daily yogurt to help stamp it out, along with any additional physician's advice. I'd recommend avoiding any antibiotics, which are more likely to advance or even cause the infection to begin with.
If a yeast infection is proved the issue, which indeed is very common, it can be stubborn to remedy but can be done. Can become acute, so it should definitely be addressed.

whatever the problem is you will be able to clear it within a matter of a week or 2 by creams or antibiotics, alot of women or girls have this so dont be worried, its just better to get it sorted now rather than later, and that way you'll be able to have sex without feeling self concious.
