Hi everyone!

This is more a question for the women. I'm 19 and just started taking Loestrin 24, the birth control pill. One of the side effects is spotting which my gynocologist told me could happen. For me this brown spotting has been occuring for four days now and I have been on the pill for 2 weeks. I'm guessing this is normal, correct? How long did it last for you? Is this spotting due to it affecting my hormones and my body is getting acclimatized to the pill? I thought if I spotted it would be for a day once in a while and not days in a row.

Thanks for any of your help. This is my first time on a pill and I always have questions. Just trying to be safe. =]

xanthic agony auntThe way your body adjusts to the hormones really depends on which brand you're taking. The first one I took was absolutely terrible, I had so many side effects from it. The second one has been great, especially compared to the first. Minor moodiness was the worst side effect I had, and that went away.

Anyway, the spotting can last from anywhere between a week to more than a month. If it goes on longer than that, it means your dose isn't high enough. Switch to a different one that isn't low-dose will solve that problem. Also, long as you take the pill at the same exact time each day, the chance of spotting going on that long or happening at all will be minimized.

The Realist agony auntWhen my gf started on birth control, I don't know which pill exactly she went through spotting for quite some time. Her sister as well which lasted about a month. This is due to the hormones reaching a new balance with in you. Make sure to check in with your doctor in about a month because the spotting should stop and they need to check if the pill is effective for you. If the spotting does not stop the pill could not be right for your body which does happen. Also remember that it takes about 2 to 3 months for the pill to fully become effective depending on the person.
