 Whether your parents will like him or not most likely depends on what kind of person he is and what kind of people your parents are. In short: you would know better than I if your parents will like your boyfriend or not.
As for date ideas, here's a bit of a different one:
How about an art museum? If you go to a modern art museum you will have tons to discuss and laugh about, because a lot of the art is so abstract.
When it comes to more normal ideas there's always the old classics like going to the movies or having dinner together at some restaurant.
How about going somewhere to watch the sunset? I know it's winter, but sunsets are really great then because the air is so clear.
