As time progressed my feelings grew and grew, then disaster, discovered she has been dating Dave for a number of years. This didn't stop my love of her and she started texting me and ringing up late at night and I thought, hey - this is really great. Then about a month after the reason we met had finished, all of a sudden, she has become quite miserable and won't tell me why, doesn't get in touch hardly at all and its really getting me down. I don't know if its anything I've said because every time I ask her, she changes the subject. How should I approach this situation

Ask her what happened. Don't get your hopes up though as she might feel rotten for behaving like she has with you. Don't forget, she did have a guy.
