I'm not sure we have enough information to give a good answer. How long have you been dating him? How long is he going to be gone? Will you be in the same place sometime in the near future? Are you willing to move if he's not coming back to your location?
Having gone through a long distance relationship for 6 years (unsuccessfully, even though we followed those 6 years with 3 years of living together) I can tell you it's rough. And it's not a real test of the relationship.
The reason that "absence makes a heart grow fonder" is that he's not around to piss you off. And when you do get together, it's not a part of your real life; you take a mini vacation, get on your best behavior, do something fun, then go back to your real life. It's easy to put someone on a pedestal that way, and impossible to know whether he's going to screw up the checkbook or leave the seat up, lol.
If you decide to do this, I wish you better luck than I had.

Brandi, I'm not being funny here. What do you WANT to do?
