 I'm myself am a bit shy around guys, the first step is the hardest but once you take it just gets easier.
the first step could be just saying hi, how are you? what you been up to? not only does help you get over being shy, it also start a conversation. if you cant handle all of that start of with just hi. if the guy interested he'll carry on the conversation.

You need to take that step. otherwise you're just going to be a billboard on his journey. You just need to be confident and be yourself. Don't worry too much about it. You have more to lose by doing nothing but everything to gain just by going forward. The worst that can happen by talking to him is you'd be the same place in his life that you are now.

 When you say that you have never spoken to him in person, does this mean that you have never spoken to him? How do you know him?
I think that, I know its hard, that you are just going to have to bite the bullet and have a chat to him.
Find out something about him, something that you have something in common with him and talk about that. Ask him questions.
Unless you pluck up the courage to talk to him, it is going to be very tricky for anything to start up between you.
