I just don't get why he would say it if he didn't mean it and if he means it why won't he ask me out!

hiyah his reaction is obvious! he was imbarresed! its hard for guys to express how they feel and hes even had the balls to say it in front of your mates so no wonder he looked slightly out of character! hes probably scared of your reaction and he may not be an open person thats why he hasnt asked you out yet. i think he does mean it but hes waiting for some sort if indication that you feel the same way and that you apreciate his honesty, it seems to me its taken a lot for him to say this so respect him for it and maybe if you feel the same reasure him. hes taken the first few steps to making that first move now its like the balls in your court.
becareful, it may have been just a matey love? i cannot say having not been there but by his reaction i get the impression its a bit stronger.
tread carefully in what you say and do, hope all works out! xxx
