If you have ANY respect for this guy you have to do it face to face. Tell him why you want to split but don't be cruel about it. Don't do the temporary break thing either, it just drags things out. My ex completely dragged out the whole break-up thing and eventually ended it over the phone and the amount of respect i lost for her was huge.
Be brave and do the right thing.

I think it depends how long you've been seeing him, over 6 months I think you owe it to him to see him in person, over 1 month, text him and tell him we need to talk then call him. less than 1 month, Just IM him or text him, but don't leave him hanging.
