Hey there, I'm wondering if anyone can help me here, my girlfriend has told me that in my sleep I have really bad nightmares and that I sometimes get violent, I'm panicking majorly here. I'm a nice guy, never anything bad about me but this is out of the ordinary, it's been happening more lately and I'm scared that I won't be able to sleep next to her again. It's frightening the hell out of me and it's scaring her too. I really don't know how to stop this bar going over the top and knocking myself out. If anyone here could help I would really appreciate it, if only to make my girlfriend's life better.

Thank you

jessica04 agony auntMy ex husband served in Iraq, and for his first year back home he used to hit me in his sleep. Not a full out punch, but he would sometimes just swing and he caught me a couple of good times.

I think you might want to try a sleep clinic or a therapist who can work with you to see what might be going on. I know it sounds expensive, but if there are psychological issues causing this, then they are the best people who can help.

In the meantime, try getting on a normal sleep schedule. Don't watch TV or use the computer or play video games for at least 1hr before bed. Also, try not to drink any alcohol for a few hours before bed.

Sometimes when our brains aren't allowed to completely shut down we can start to have vibrant dreams. Your body actually employs a paralysis mechanism to keep you from reacting physically to these dreams. If there is a disconnect between this mechanism and your brains' sleep signals, then professional help will be the only way to go about fixing the problem.
