A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (25 October 2010):

chigirl agony auntDidn't they also call the female pilots under Second World War "wasps"? As in Women Airforce Service Pilots... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_Airforce_Service_Pilots

Since the OP is keen to call this the same as a stalker I suggest she tells us why she believes this means stalker.

I agree with the other posters. He thinks you are a winged insect that lives in a house made from chewing leaves up and mixing it with your spit.

Cerberus_Raphael agony auntTisha-1 is probably right but then again, I am assuming he does not know about the White Anglo-Saxon Protestants or he was not thinking about that at the time.

The person in question might have even meant that in a more metaphorical sense, he/she have been trying to compare you to a wasp who stings or is perhaps parasitic in nature. There are a number of meanings, either way, it is meant to be derogatory.

I hope that helps.

A female reader, aphexinfinite United Kingdom +, writes (25 October 2010):

aphexinfinite agony auntmy guess is they were perhaps being polite whilst insulting you, generally wasps do not die and tend to sting predators over and over. so perhaps next time if someone says something you dont understand then ask them to explain and if they dont then walk away not worth it. good luck

A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (25 October 2010):

Tisha-1 agony auntIn my day, it meant "White Anglo-Saxon Protestant." This was the group considered to be the ruling elite in the US. It is generally meant as a derogatory term.

You might ask the very powerful question: "What do you mean?" when people ask things you don't understand fully. If they say, "oh, you know!" simply reply, "no, I don't know precisely what you mean. Could you please explain?"

Just keep repeating the question very calmly and generally this will unsettle the person who may have been trying to be insulting.

There may well be other meanings to the word.
