A reader, anonymous, writes (1 December 2008):

i agree with hlskitten, it could be a chest infection. i used to have these problems as a little kid along with a fever when i had a chest infection or an asthma attack - and usually i wouldnt eat or drink for days, does your child have any breathing problems at all?

it may be worth asking your doctor about it.

as for menengitis, kitten and birdy have already given you the symptons of menengitis.

i hope we've helped you, good luck xx

birdynumnums agony auntMenengitis has a red, pinpricked and flushed rash that will not go away if you take a drinking glass and roll it over the affected area. Another symptom is that you can't put your chin down to your chest because of the pain in your neck. You didn't say how old your child is, but being without fluids and getting dehydrated, especially with running a temperature, can disturb the electrolyte balance and it's a serious worry. If the child is old enough, get them to take fluids any way possible. Popsicles, freezies, juice, anything. Rule of thumb is that if it is a low fever (100), the child should be seen after 48 hours, but if it's a high fever (103), don't let them go 24 hours without seeing a Doctor. However, Menengitis often has a low fever attached to it, so monitoring the rash and neck pain is important. "Walking Pneumonia" also often has a low fever. If the child totally loses their "personality", if they become limp and have skin pallor (get a greyish tinge in their cheeks), get them to Emergency right away and demand a Doctors immediate attention. I am a firm believer that every Mom knows when something is wrong with their own child, so if you don't think the Doctor is right, be vigilant and get another opinion. I hope you have help nearby. Is your Mom around? It sounds like you could use a break. You know, chances are this really is just a regular cold. It's hard to watch those little noses get all stuffed up. Let us know how he is doing. XXX

A female reader, hlskitten United Kingdom +, writes (1 December 2008):

hlskitten agony auntHow old is the child? Sounds like a chest infection to me, but only a doc could say. If he's not going to the toilet, he could be getting dehydrated. And that isn't good, but also depends on the age. Always best to give ill kids lots of water. When mine were small I was always told not to worry if they didn't feel like eating. But feed them if they did. But make sure they sip lots of fluids.

But I used to worry about menengitis too. I think thats natural. If he can touch his chin on his chest, apparently thats a good sign. With menengitis they cant, something to do with the neck.

Let us know how he goes.
