I'm willing to try it just in case because I'm getting desperate. One of his friends told me how much he has been agonising over what to get me and has finally settled on something he could only get from a town 6 hours drive away. So he jumped in the car and got it for me. According to our friend (who is refusing to help me come up with ideas unfortunately), it is something I will love. He will do anything at all to make me happy and I really want to do something for him, to even up the score and show him beyond doubt that I care as much for him as he does for me. So if you have ever done, or thought of doing, something wonderfully romantic, unique or spontaneous for your partner, or given them something sweet or memorable, please let me know about it! He doesn't have a lot of hobbies, he mostly works hard and spends time with me or friends. The only sport he's into is cycling and the music he likes is very unusual and hard to buy (plus I don't know what he already has) so I think I need to aim for a sweet, thoughtful gift. He does wear some jewelery but he already has a ring and 2 bracelets which is maybe about the limit to jewelery a guy would wear.

Trying to compete with gift giving can be stressful. You'll expend a lot of effort and your efforts may not produce the reults you want. This Christmas I am going to treat my girlfriend and I to a daytrip into the nearby mountains where we will rent snowshoes and go for a wintertime walk in the woods. It's very spontaneous, won't cost an arm and a leg, is reasonably safe, and loads of fun. Snowshoing may not be your thing, or there may not be any snow within a reasonable distance, but the sort of activity that will include the both of you together is often the sort of "gift" that will not only advance your romance but quite possibly, make your life more exciting, too. Another idea for a "mutually enjoyable" gift is to go on a "Christmas Cruise" on one of those tour boats that are all lit up with lights and holiday cheer. Some of them even serve dinner to their guests. These sorts of "Let's do it together" gifts can go well served up with a small token gift, like a bottle of his favorite brew :-)
