When I was just a little younger than you I had the same problem. Turns out I wasn't ovulating and that is needed to trigger a proper period. They fixed it easily by having me take some synthetic progesterone for a few months, no problem. See your OB and let her know your symptoms; she'll fix you right up.
Don't delay, though. You'll get stuck with too frequent, heavy periods and breakthrough bleeding until you get it fixed. Blech. And just in case it's something else (remembering I'm not a doctor [grin]) you'll want to see someone. Good luck hon.
