On top of the bottom sheet, and under the top sheet; where you yourself noticed them. Do they look fresh and clean, or worn?
Even if she went to the laundromat. Does she normally shakeout the sheets before folding them? Normally you have to get the wrinkles and static from the dryer out of your linen or bed sheets in order to proper fold them.
Now there. Figure it out.

The "mixed in laundry" would only be possible if she goes to a laundromat outside the house. I'm guessing that grabbed them quickly after you confronted her.
It's more possible that the man she was in bed with kicked them off in bed, and went "commando" afterwards if he had a pair of comfortable shorts on. I've seen that firsthand and had to pull underwear out of the bed before.
I agree with Garbo - be highly suspicious and look for other clues. If you have a washing machine in your home, then she's busted.
If you have the pair of underwear, and she hasn't snatched them away, this is gross, but smell them. Clean is clean. An aroused man leaves evidence of pre-ejaculate in underwear as well as sweat and umm..other things, depending on the level of personal hygiene.

That sounds really odd.
Her guess (that it got mixed up in the laundry) is as good as any guess I can make.
Does she do laundry outside the house? Or do more people share your washer/dryer? If so... it's entirely possible and like C. Grant said, if they are clean.. it's possible.

There is a slim chance that it got mixed up in the laundry - so don't dismiss your wife's theory just yet - but even if it I did - why would it end up in your bed? Surely it would be in the laundry basket?!! Having said that - surely she wouldn't be that careless either - if she was playing around.
Realistically - it does sound to me that something has gone on - but proving it is going to be hard unless your wife admits something. I would watch her very carefully from now on & don't be fooled!
Good luck!

Who knows if it's the truth, but I would think that if a guy was at your house he would have remembered his underwear when he left. It's not like a jacket. At the same time that's the most suspicious article of clothing that just happened to show up when you were gone.

If they were mixed in with the laundry then they'd be freshly clean. Were they?

Unless you use a public laundry where the heck did they come from? I think she may be telling porky pies (lies). Thats a bit far fetched!

The answer is that you need to investigate the story because it does not add up. I would not confront or flip on her but put in prudent traces such check through her phone, look through her phone bill in past few months, examine the bill for texts, look through social media like FB or chat apps, follow her where she goes while you are supposedly away ... Then see what the evidence shows. If nothing, then she is clean.
