A female United States age 26-29, *atsername_23 writes:

Hi. I am a teenager and like most teenagers I want to express myself. I dyed my hair bright red, and when I say bright red, I mean BRIGHT red; I love it!

I am usually a shy and quiet person, and listen to my mother and teachers, im not a goody two shoes, I just dont see the point in doing bad things.

So I wanted to dye my hair red because it's different. Im not really sure what my real reason is for doing it. It's not like I want attention from everyone, but I do want people to notice. It's nice for people to look at me strange because I'm so used to blending in and being boring.

But my real question is: What do you think when you see someone with bright hair? What do guys think about it? Are you intimidated, scared, attracted?

All answers are appreciated, thank you.

So_Very_Confused agony auntOn a teenager I would think NOTHING of it. and if you LOVE IT then stop caring what OTHERS think.

Depends if it's done well. I'm a hair person, I always pay attention to hair. I can see extensions from a mile away, just as I can tell whether hair is dyed or natural.

If you have the haircolour of Nariko in that playstation 3 game and you totally rock it, I would probably notice and think "cool" and maybe even give you a compliment if I'm not in a shy mood.

Just always make sure you do these things because you LIKE it, not to seek attention.

Xx-Scorpio-xX agony aunti wouldn't really think much of it unless it was a really unique style/cut or bright multi-coloured to which would interest me, as i've seen a lot of people with brightly coloured hair especially red and pink.

As long as you like it thats all that matters. :) I've been bleach blonde, bright red, bright blue, purple, black, brown and currently my hair is bright orangey red which I'm in love with :)

CindyCares agony aunt I'd think you are trying too hard.

You want to be seen as special, unique, distinctive, nothing wrong with that, it's what all girls your age want. But with the abundance of crimson hair , pink hair, violet hair, ...platinum,silver, blue, you name it... you can see around , maybe the ultimate fashion statement that says " Look at me " is keeping your hair their natural mousy brown or dishwater blonde colour !

A female reader, anonymous, writes (18 January 2012):

it depends on the shade of red. mostly it can look cute and fun, especially on younger people, but it can fade to quite a dull, horrible colour, and start to look very harsh, so don't over dye it or let it get dry and frizzy. Red haired people get all sorts of associations, like 'firey' and hot tempered, or seductive, and where I'm from, they normally get teased alot, but people tend to judge on the whole appearance and personality, not just the hair, so don't worry so much and just have fun.

YouWish agony auntBright red hair tells me that the person is creative! This might not be true, but I'd think you were artsy/creative or maybe a musician or poet. It would also tell me that you're not boring!

I've had my share of bright hair colored friends, though I never did it myself since I grew up in an ultra-strict house. my parents would have *killed* me. I think it beats the hell out of excessive piercings or permanent tattoos or plastic surgery!

Shadow Rose agony auntHonestly, I'd probably be your best friend XD I've always wanted to dye my hair red or crimson, but it's been dyed black, and I dont want to grow out my natural color just to dye it red, lol.

Anyone who thinks badly of you is stupid :P

person12345 agony auntI usually just notice because it's very bright and then don't give it much thought at all. Usually the only thought is that she's trying to be different. I dyed my hair around your age too, bright fire engine red and platinum blonde.

I second conditioner and using special shampoos for color treated hair. Red washes out the fastest of any of the colors, so treat it well. You can also buy red shampoo to help maintain the color.
