 I don't think he'll tell you by himself if he doesn't feel the need to. You should slowly build up your relationship to a level where you both can easily open up to each other comfortably.You should ask him seeing as you're curious. Just tell him you want to know a little more about him, not to answer if he feels uncomfortable but you want to know if he's [insert question].
