Do you know anything about him? Does he play any sports? Is he active in any extra curricular activities? Those are always good topics of conversation. If not, more general talk about music, movies, TV, etc never hurts either. Heck, you could talk to him about some assignment in your class, or ask if he wants to do homework for that class together.
So many options... You just need to say hi and see where it goes.
