hi, im 13 and yesturday morning, i had blood in my knickers, which im sure was my first period. at first i panicked, but then i calmed my self down and used tissue. i dont feel i can talk to my mum about it just yet, but im worried that it will get out of hand. i have school on monday, and if i dont get any pads, im worried it might leak through to my skirt.

i have tiny amounts of blood on the tissue each time i go to the toliet, but its barely noticeable. i just dont get why i had so much blood in my knickers yesturday, and now theres barely any. help...what should i do?!

Yes it is hard and it might be a bit imbarresing but she was your age once and she will understand.

It will be less imbarresting than leaking at school.

But, dont tell your mum infrount of lots of people, just tell her you need to talk to her, she would have been expecting you to have your period sooner or later. :) When i got my period i was only 9 we had had our sex ed at school but i was soo scard i just run up to my mum and was like mum!!!!!!!! i got blood in my pants!!! hehe she wont let go of dat memory

Don't worry :)

I got mine a month before my 14th Birthday

I was scared to tell my mum too, and I thought to myself "no I NEED to tell her" so I went downstairs (When my dad wasn't there) and said "Mum, I think I have my period" and she just laughed and said "I thought you were looking awfully pale" then she got me everything I needed for a little while :)

Remember she was your age once as well and probably had to confront your gran about it =P

Tisha-1 agony auntDefinitely tell your Mum now. She knows how old you are and she knows what you're going through. It's funny, I told my mom when I started and it turned out she'd bought supplies for me just in case only that week! Isn't that a bit more than a coincidence?

What's the point in not telling her? I'm sure you're a bit embarassed, but believe me, we all go through this and the sooner you have the right supplies, the more confident you'll feel.

Of course, you could always pop round to the chemist and ask for the supplies you'll need there. I personally think it would be a lot easier to talk to Mum rather than the pharmacist!

eyeswideopen agony auntAw come on, you must know your Mom's been menstruating all these years and she's been expecting you to start anytime since you were 10 so this is hardly going to come as a surprise to her. Tell her and she will make sure you have all the supplies you need. She also will reassure you that what you are experiencing is quite normal.

Myau agony auntYou must tell your mum right away. You will need pads.

Although I am a guy I have had several gfs and I can tell you during your cycle it can get messy and a tissue isnt going to save you at school.

This isnt something you should be embarrised about, your a woman now enjoy it

A female reader, lizzyyy United Kingdom +, writes (9 April 2010):

I agree with Ticki, my mum was happy and we hadd a little party to celebrate my 'womanhood' haha. Don't worry, your mum's been through this all before, every woman has, so you don't need to feel embarressed or anything, and if you use tissues, it might get a bit unclean down there, so it's best if you ask your mum for pads because they are more clean :)

A female reader, anonymous, writes (9 April 2010):

Just tell her you needs some pads or ask her where she keeps her pads - if you don't want to talk about it then that is fine but as you say, you don't want to find yourself leaking at an unsuitable moment. My brothers actually went o get me my first pads - and don't be embarrassed, this is somehing that is gonna happen every month for the time 40 odd years, the sooner you get used to it - the easier it is to deal with it :)

If you can't tell your mum then ask a female teacher or trusted friend - just say you got your period that morning and had forgetton to bring any pads with you etc. Can you talk to your dad or siblings about your period???

ticki agony aunti think you should talk to your mum about it. just tell her and she will help you and answer any questions u have. you shouldn't be embarised about your first period.

the amounts of blood you get can be different every day of your period. my first period was like yours. first i had alot and then there was almost nothing. now it is different for every period. sometimes i get loads. sometimes i have almost nothing. MY mum was HAPPY about my first period!! she said it was a sign i was gowing up!
