I can't decide on college but I can't put it off for ever!

Question - (18 October 2015) 5 Answers - (Newest, 8 September 2016)
A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I'm having a really difficult time figuring out what I want to go to college for. I took a year off after high school to relax and figure it out but still have no idea what I want to do.

The main reason I find it difficult is because of the bad economy and how difficult it can be to find a job. Regardless of what kind of degree I decide to get I don't want it to be a waste of time for lack of a Better word.

I just can't decide what I want to do. I can't really wait around forever as I need to be able to provide for myself.

There's lots of personality tests online now and I suggest you try a gander at them. Deciding and writing it down will help you view it from a different angle. I stumbled across this one online, www.opencolleges.edu.au/careers/career-quiz you might want to give it a try! Best of luck to you!

A male reader, anonymous, writes (21 October 2015):

You really dont have to do a degree if you dont want to and you certainly dont have to do one now ,this instance.

However you need to think about what it is that you want out of life.

All that everyone here has said about degrees is true but it really is best to know what you want to do before investing your time and money in it.

Are you destined for a different life?

Would you rather use the money you would spend on a degree for something else?

Would you prefer to put the money down as a deposit for a house or are you the sort who would be quite happy to live in a caravan so long as they were doing their own thing like looking after their ponies or running a dog grooming parlour..or just living a different than average commercial life.

You have no clear cut desire to go into one of the professions like law, medicine, accountancy, teaching or social care as of yet,so you have to ask yourself if you want a career in the media, in town and country planning and so on.

If all else fails just randomnly pick a course with your eyes shut and ask yourself if you would enjoy it.

Do you have a burning desire for the social life of uni or are you quite happy with the interesys and friends you have?

Not all people who do a degree end up working in the same field so a good job in something you start in can often offer you the oppurtunity to train you to the top.

Some companies even send employees off to do degrees and pay for them while they're there as well so if you are working in something you love you can get on the job training and a definate job to come back to at the end.

If you are happily doing a bit of retail work in your local supermarket then see what they offfer for advancement, because some companies like loyalty .

Aunty BimBim agony auntStudy a subject you will enjoy rather than one that you hope will lead to a job. If you cant decide what you would enjoy there is a career quiz app that can be downloaded free from iTunes app store, or Google Play. Just search for 'Career Quiz Australia', or see if this link works:

A male reader, no nonsense Aidan United Kingdom +, writes (18 October 2015):

Denizen is absolutely right in the advice he gives. Lots of employers value a degree because it shows you are disciplined, articulate and able to work hard to achieve something, rather than because they are really interested in the content of the degree. Unless you have a clear idea what you want to do and how studies relate to it (as in an aspiring chemist should probably study chemistry), I’d say pick a subject that interests you. Perhaps do some reading on the kinds of careers people gravitate to after their studies, but don’t see these as an exhaustive range of possibilities. If the problem is that you don’t know what you’re interested in, perhaps you could look for some temporary work so that you’re earning whilst you take the time required to figure it out. Visit colleges, ask to speak to current students, read prospectuses carefully and hone in on the detail of what studying any given subject will involve.

I wish you all the very best.

A male reader, Denizen United Kingdom +, writes (18 October 2015):

Denizen agony auntThe idea is to study something you find you are interested in. Your degree doesn't necessarily have to be related to your future occupation. I have heard of people with music degrees becoming captains of industry.

If you have a facility for learning vast tracts of tort then law will serve you well in many walks of life.

Someone I know who wanted to go into catering needed a science degree.

Sometimes you get to a certain point in life and you look back and see how all the dots join up. Looking forward from your youth the road is impossible to see.

And that's a good thing. How boring would life be if it was all predestined.

So, to repeat, study something you are interested in despite how useful you think it may be. And as an after-thought, it isn't compulsory to go to college. Only 69 of the world's top CEOs graduated from top universities. Think about: Steve Jobbs, Richard Branson, Dave Thomas of Wendys, David Green, worth about 6 billion, Michael Dell, worth about 20 billion etc.
