I used to really enjoy the catch-up emails we would send to each other filled with witty banter to one another. There was much to say since we didn't see each other very often. My girlfriend and I are in contact ALL the time and never need to catch up on anything. We always know exactly what each other are doing and it's frankly sometimes suffocating. I would look forward to the emails from my friend, but the texts and chats from my girlfriend I know are always coming and sometimes the frequency annoys me.Any ideas how I can acheive something similar to what I had with my friend, but with my girlfriend?

Before i start of, it was good choice to break off contact with your friend.
For one thing, you don't want to ignore your girlfriend. I guess what you are asking is to make your relationship more exciting, Go out with your friends and family more and this will give you more stuff to talk about. With your girlfriend, go to watch comedy films and have a laugh about it in a nice restaurant. Maybe you should invest into a WII ( the playstation) and you two go head to head against eachother. It brings my family, my boyfriend and I together so i think you should give it a try.

Invest all that energy you wasted on some other girl on your girlfriend. In time it will pay off (if you love her).
