I am due to go through a major event in my life, though most of you would think it is nothing if I said. I have been worrying about this event that I have blown everything out of proportion and gained a deep anxiety from it which has affected my week.

The anxiety is worse in the morning when I have woken up and I feel really nervous and have an array of negative thoughts in my head about the event. It gradually gets slightly better during the day until I speak to my parents about it and it vanishes in time for bed. But then after a good night sleep I wake and its back again.

Are there any pills I can take to calm my nerves and worry? And do you think it is likely to pass on the day of the event?

lisarocksyoursocksoff agony auntah it sounds like you are suffering from panic attacks or some sort of anxiety disorder?

anxiety can be often dehabilitating an you feel there is nothing you can do to change your mind set, and it is extremely common; so trust me you're not alone.

there are numerous things you can do to combat anxiety. the thing to realise that it IS YOUR MIND SET. it is the way in which you view things cognitively, the best advice i can give you is to go to the doctors, he can assess your anxiety and either refer you to a counsellor/or some one who deals with cognitive/behavioural thinking. that is will probably happen if your anxiety is very extreme.

the most likely thing is your doctor will give you drugs which help calm anxiety, often even he can give anti-depressants because these help with calming anxiety.

but you have to be honest with him so he can give you the best option, he may even just offer you relaxation techniques. but i promise he will recognize that it is not stupid.

the best method is to speak about it and be aware that it is not you, but your mind set, logically you feel that this worrying seems "stupid" yet you cannot seperate yourself, this is a good sign because it means it is not you but your anxiety.

hope that's of some help

take care

A female reader, TasteofIndia United States +, writes (8 June 2007):

TasteofIndia agony auntHi there,

Ahhh, the airport. As for that part of your holiday, don't worry about it. The employees at the airport are used to having people there who don't know what they're doing. Take it from me. Every time I step near an airport I get nervous and have no idea what to do, but it's always easier than you think it will be.

Just go up to someone and say, "hey - I'm not really sure what I should be doing right now... can you help me out?". They're trained for people like you who aren't as experienced with the airport.

Your holiday will be lots of fun. You'll be home in no time! But, I assure you that once you're on the plane and on your way you're nerves will turn over and suddenly transform into excitement.

Is this your first time away from home? Or maybe first time away from home with a girlfriend?

Bring a journal with you so you can write things down. I find that helps a lot of people with anxiety. It gives you a blank page to release your fears and worries onto.

Just remember that you're young and adventuring. When you're older, you'll be able to tell your grandkids all about the exciting things you've done in the past and THIS HOLIDAY will be one of them. Take tons of pictures.

I think that the anticipation is the worst part of your situation. When you're actually on the plane, I think it'll simmer down.

As for actual remedies for nervousness, I don't know... a glass of wine? That's a bad suggestion, I'm sorry. Try out the other Aunt's suggestions.

Have FUN FUN FUN on your holiday. I'm totally jealous, I'd give anything to go on a holiday with my special someone.

It will sound stupid but I am going away on holiday with my girlfriend and both of us are still quite young and have not been away yet. I don't know what to do in the airportn and my mum says she will tell me the day before. But I have had a week full of worry and stress and Its getting to me so much. I have negative thoughts about what might happen and the holiday itself not been enjoyable and dragging on. etc.

A female reader, AskEve United Kingdom +, writes (8 June 2007):

AskEve agony auntYou don't need to take any pills for this, all you need is to change your mindset. DON'T think negative thoughts, think POSITIVE ones instead! Think of it this way... FEAR stands for False Evidence Appearing Real. Fear immobilizes and makes it virtually impossible for people to think effectively because it bypasses the pre frontal cortex and goes directly to your right brain emotional center and is thus not even analyzed first! Feelings such as worry and anxiety are in the same category. See what benefits you could possibly derive from sitting in your favourite chair and contemplating as well as experiencing these feelings intensely for a few hours? None of course because they do not deliver any benefit other than getting you into an even greater state of fear. So you see, that fear, anxiety and worry all belong in the trash bin because they do not deliver any benefit whatsoever. Love on the other hand will get you to understand and be less fearful. This in turn will make it possible for you to experience joy and bliss.

I suggest you watch a movie called "The Secret". It costs $4.95 (£2.50) to watch straight away from your PC. It will help you tremendously regarding this major even you have going on soon. Watch it and let me know how you feel afterwards.

Remember always: You have a mind, your feelings come from your mind therefore you can control your feelings. In other words, YOU are in charge and nobody else. YOU determine the future. And you become what you THINK.

I wishI wich you had said what the event is. Valerian is a great help with anxiety - from a health food shop. Try it before the big day to see if it works. It is quite strong.
