Yes, I agree that honesty is the best policy. He obviously hasn't given up hope on you or he wouldn't still be calling. If he's decent enough he will understand when you explain your feelings to him. Take a few deep breaths and let him know how you feel! Good luck with it all! :o)

 Tell him that you are sorry that you didn't know how you felt earlier and that you do like him. It's not like he suddenly stopped liking you so he'll understand.
Next time he calls answer or instead why don't you call him right now. Just say everything at once and see what happens, that way there is no time to worry about it.
