A female reader, anonymous, writes (21 January 2009):

Mostly depends on the guy and the relationship - ie, whether he really cares about the girl or not.

When I was 19, I dated a guy who broke up w/ me after a week when I wouldn't sleep with him. When I was 24, I dated a guy who waited three months before I let him spend the night, and even then, we were umm ... creative (i.e., nothing that could've gotten me pregnant) for months longer. I think he thought my hang-ups were a little weird by that point (we dated for a couple of years before we went "all the way"), but he was a good sport about it, because he knew I had my reasons and he honestly, legitimately cared about me.

My advice is to hold out for exactly what you want. The right guy will wait. The guy who won't wait ... it'll kind of suck for a while, but then you'll find someone new.

MutantKitten agony auntDepends on the guy. With my first boyfriend, we waited 10 months, for my second...maybe 1.

It shouldn't matter to you though, how long he's willing to wait. You should go by your watch not his. Don't let his threat of leaving make you give it up early. Cos honestly, how bad would you feel if you did give in, and then he left you anyway?

A good guy will wait as long as you need. Anyone else isn't really worth your time. As long as you're both clear on your values, and time frames (ie, if you're waiting till marriage, you should probably tell him that now) it should be fine.

it all depends on the guy.. i waited for a girl for 2 and 1/2 years untill from begining of 8th grade till about 5 months ago...that is just the type of guy i am and i really did love her... it just depends on who the guy is and how he is
