How likely is it for a 40 year old to get pregnant?

A male United States age 51-59, anonymous writes:

I am in a relationship with a wonderful woman who is 40, never been pregnant, and wants to have children. So do I. I'd prefer to be married first, but we are both aware of her biological clock ticking, and marriage may be a while off due to several reasons.

My question is, how likely is it for a 40 y.o. woman to get pregnant? She is healthy, lean, fit, doesn't smoke or drink. She has had venereal warts, but they were treated, and I dont think they will affect anything.

I've come inside her all times of the month and during ovulation, but nothing.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (12 September 2010):

This is true that babies born to women over 35 are at greater risk for birth defects, like Down syndrome, but this should not stop you, the percentage that end up that way is small. All you can do is keep trying to get pregnant, have sex often especially when she is ovulating, and don't waste time she is not getting any younger.

birdynumnums agony auntWhy is marriage a while off? It's not a play, it's not a musical, it's not a party or a question of money or location.

It's your vows. Pure and simple.

Ever thine, ever mine, ever ours.

I think that her whole system, including her eggs, might be a bit more receptive to a more welcoming situation, like being married.

Forget the 120+ guests and go to City Hall. Time's a wasting and you have nothing to lose and everything to gain - and yes - 40+ women can get pregnant!

The Realist agony auntThere is still a good chance that she could get pregnant. I have known quite a few people who have had children later on in life. I will mention that the child is at a higher risk for many disorders but I am sure you will have a healthy child. Keep trying and don't give up. Best of luck to you both.
