Which spermicide works the best and what are the chances of it not working properly? (Never used it before). My girlfriend likes to make love without condoms because we feel closer that way but we also would not like a baby so I am wondering just how good is spemicide?

A female reader, jessica04 United States +, writes (2 March 2009):

jessica04 agony auntThe only difference my BF ever felt when we used spermicide was that it made things feel very thick. Other than that, we loved how easy it was.

My spermicide came with an applicator, kind of like a tampon. The applicator screwed on to the tip of the tube, and you squeezed spermicide in there until it was full (think of a tire pressure gauge). Then she just inserts the tube all the way back into her vagina and press in the spermicide (this will be similar to using a tampon for her)

Also, spermicides can be used in a diaphragm. She would just have to go get fitted for one by her gyno.

It is true that you might have a sensitivity reaction to spermicide, but since it was designed to be held in the sensitive vagina area, you most likely will not have any reaction. Just try it and see if you like it.

The only contraceptive that is ever 100% is abstinence, so see if she can get a diaphragm fitted. Have you ever tried lambskin condoms? They're supposed to feel much better than latex. They're hard to find though, I have only seen them at adult sex shops.

ArmyMedic agony auntUnfortunately, spermicide is not great on it's own, in fact it's about as much use as the withdrawal method (which is rubbish).

I know you don't like condoms but they are the most effective form of birth control.

There is always the female condom (looks a bit like a plastic bag), the diaphragm (which isn't great), the coil, which is invasive and doctors prefer not to use it on girls who have not given birth.

And why can't she take a different pill I'm sure there are ways of still producing an egg and being on birth control?

I'd speak to her doctor and find out what options are open to you both.

A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (2 March 2009):

Tisha-1 agony auntSpermicide can be used on its own, which I guess is better than no birth control at all, but it is more effective if used with a barrier method. She could consider using a diaphragm or cervical cap with the spermicide. It is designed for use with those as well as with a condom. As with all medicines, there are a few people who will have an allergic reaction to it or find it irritating.

Here's a chart for you to consult on the various methods of birth control:

My suggestion is that she discuss this with her gynecologist. If she's planning to become an egg donor, then she's seeing one now. If she isn't, she should be, as she is sexually active and is having sex without a condom. She therefore is at higher risk of HPV (human papilloma virus) and other sexually transmissible diseases. I'm not trying to insult you, I just need to point out that men can carry infections silently, that is, not show any symptoms--HPV, herpes and chlamydia being just a few of them. If you have had previous sexual partners and haven't used a condom, then you might have been exposed to them yourself.

Both of you need to get to your respective doctors for a thorough check up. She should be discussing her birth control options with her gynecologist. It's the sensible and responsible thing to do.

Take care!

A male reader, Ted-ster United States +, writes (2 March 2009):

Do not use spermicide without a condom. As a couple, if you don't want to use a condom, use the pill. Spermicide without a condom will irritate your penis terribly. Also, your chances of getting her pregnant without the condom and just spermicide increases significantly.

This is verified as being by the original poster of the question

We hate condoms and she was on birth control until recently because she wants to be an egg donor so we thought maybe spermicide would be a good option bu i don't know how well it works.

Make sure she is on birth contol. If she is any type will work. If she isn't you still have a good chance of her getting pregnate. I would use condoms till you know for sure she is on birth control. I have meet alot of girls that have lied to guys about birth control just to get pregnate.
