How far can you go before you've lost your virginity?

A female , anonymous writes:

At what point does one lose her virginity?

Is it just by engaging in sexual acts?- but a kiss is considered a sexual act so how far from heavy kisses to heavy petting can you go before you can consider you've had intercourse and are no longer a virgin?

Thanks everybody.

I really wish I had more of a guardian to talk to about this stuff, but my parents are divorced and I'm so confussed all the time about things my friends tell me and I don't have my mother to ask.

I haven't been in the romance game long, I've stayed with one guy a long time and we are very best friends and so naturally we felt very close to each other and we ended up testing our limits and I was worried I had gone to far.

But thanks for putting my mind at ease, all of you.

It used to be about hymens, but they can be broken with tampons! I would say that it is penetration with a penis into the vagina that constitutes having sex.

Thats a good point.

Sex is an abbreviation for sexual intercourse which at one point basically meant sex where the penis enters the vagina, now it means many other stuff. Anal sex is understandable but oral sex and even those where you arent together such as fone sex and cyber sex etc. - what sex these days mean is any act (including kissing) that create sexual feelings once taking place.

You are no longer a virgin when you have had sex with penetration.

Many people get confused with what a virgin means, it doesnt mean you havn't done something before, it means you havn't had sex before. Like the advert, i aint a virgin but i am a wax virgin, because to be a wax virgin you would have to had sex with a wax model?

A reader, pops +, writes (8 August 2005):

Kissing doesn't count. Neither does " Lusting in your heart", as former President Jimmie Carter confessed to having done. I don't know where you kids get this misinformation, because there is so much good advice available now through the internet. You obviously have access to the Net, as you have consulted here. Please continue to ask these kind of questions, but pass the answers and information you learn here back to the friends who told you these stupid ideas. And, ask them to pass it back to the idiot who told them. Only then can we end the passing of ignorance around to our young people. ( If I sound a little tough, its because I am probably 40 years older than you, and I heard the same misinformation when I was a kid. We didn't have the internet, and all information about sex was censored for both kids and Adults!)

A reader, schlottjl United States +, writes (7 August 2005):

schlottjl agony auntVirginity is a technical term meaning that no penis has passed and broken the hymen. The hymen is a membrane in the vaginal canal that will usually break during the first time intercourse is attempted but can also break if you, for example, fall while water skiing, or can break while using a tampon. (I used tampons for years but did break the hymen during the first time and there was a considerable amount of blood.) That was an important gift back when sanity ruled the day. I think you might be also thinking of chastity. That would tend to include all acts that have a sexual overtone and that you do in front of mom, dad or grandma. A chaste woman is a pure woman who is opposite of a slut.

The reason people usually cared about this stuff is because of religion or because they are female and come from a background that taught her wisely what will increase her happiness in the long run even if it is not instantly gratifying. If this is the reason you ask then chastity is important and makes you a virtuous woman (the kind of gal you take home to mom.)

Basically, if you have had intercourse (a man has penetrated you), you no longer are a virgin. This, in my opinion, means anal sex and blow jobs too. Though technically, you might just be referred to as easy and you would definitely not be chaste. If you grope boys in backs of cars, you are not necessarily easy but neither are you chaste.

(Very brief/simplified hist.)

The Hebrews used to show the sheets spotted with blood from the hymen breaking after the couple had their first intercourse thus consummating the marriage. They displayed the sheets to the wedding guests (nice huh?) To prove that the contract for virginity was fulfilled. (Proof she was chaste.) Thus the blood covenant was sealed. When agreements were made over shed blood they were sacred. (I.e. salvation and forgiveness through grace because of the shed blood of Christ. So it is extra reliable because of the blood spilled out. Also the reason for ancient sacrifice.) The blood covenant was sacred and could not be broken so long as any party that was covered by the contract still was alive.. This is why marriage was until death do you part.
