It may sound funny. but a condom is the only way to have safe sex. You will not get pregnant if you use one. 99.5% There is only 2 days a month where you can get pregnant. And if you do break one just dush real good after.

These posts below are right. Condoms are highly effective and grabbing one with spermicidal lube helps more for effectiveness.
However, let me add this: condoms are actually 99.99% effective if you use them properly!! The only reason condoms are rated at a 95-97% rate is because of user error, typically. Never let his penis get close to entering your vagina without protection! And make sure you two place the condom on correctly (pinch the reserve spot at the top to remove air and roll the wrapper as far down as it will go). Last tip: make sure he removes himself before he goes flaccid.
If you follow those tips, then you should not have to worry at all about getting pregnant while using a condom.

A condom by itself, when used properly, has between a 95-97& rate of effectiveness. You can also use a condom-friendly spermicide as an extra method of protection.
Also, some condoms already come with spermicidal lubricant on them. Just make sure neither of you will have a skin reaction to the spermicide, which isn't usual.
Remember, get a new condom, make sure it is put on correctly. Get a condom that has a spermicidal lube. If you buy lube or spermicide separately, make sure they are condom friendly. The spermicide will say on the box if it can be used with latex condoms. The lube needs to be water based.
Use a condom, and if you can get on birth control, I suggest you do. Be safe! :-)

I think it's 97% effective - but there is, of course, always that 3% to think about. Don't do anything you're not comfortable with :-)

Condoms used properly are 95% protective against pregnancy and stop all STIs. Condoms used with Hormone based birth control will give you 99.9% protection.
If it is his first time too, can I suggest that you both practice putting condoms on, because if you do it wrong, it can easily split. Also make sure you buy new condoms and don't use the one he's had in his wallet since he was 13, as that will be past it's use by date and may be damaged.
The best way to not get pregnant is not to have sex.
