Hi.

On Friday night I had unprotected sex, which I know was stupid and everything, but now I'm worried I could be pregnant. I was just wondering whats the earliest I could possibly take the test?? I'd only just come off my period when we did it, do I have to wait till my next period?? Or can I take it sooner??

Please help, I'm really worried.

Thanks x

A female reader, anonymous, writes (12 March 2008):

Your fertile days are not the day after your period has finished. If you see the first day of your period as day 1 of your cycle, your most fertile days are usually between day 10-16 (depending on women) between any of those days your body will release an egg (ovulation) for 48 hrs. After that you are out of your fertile period. When you ovulate you have increased amount of cervial mucus, that means you see it when you wipe yourself or in your pants. If you haven't had sex for about 48hrs previous to that, then chances you are preggie are low

Im in the same situation too! Im surprised at how many others are, I feel so idiotic for giving in at the moment of passion & not using protection, and I haven't issued the morning after pill & its now 4 days later, but i could possibly get the coil in as thats also an emergency contraceptive but im not too sure on that.

I think you have to wait 3 weeks until you can take a pregnancy test but its best to go to doctors to get it done, then depending on the result they can help you with your decision of what you would like to do.

When we had sex, id only really come off my period the previous day and so i was at my most fertile part of the month, which is worrying. Hopefully everything will be fine though, for you and others. :)

Oblivia agony auntJust wanted to say, since it came up in a previous answer, that the morning after pill is not aborting. It postpones the ovulation and thus works to prevent the pregnancy, not to terminate it. If you are pregnant when you take the pill, it won't terminate. That is one reason you shouldn't take it after 72 hours have passed.

This does not mean however that it is in any way good for the body to take those pills too often anyways. Better use contraception pills and condoms.

I know if from a Doctor, you can take a blood test until you reach 15 days since you had sex, and you can take a pregnancy test, those you buy at the pharmacy and take it but it won't guarantee you the same result as the blood one. Morning after pill, I won't recommend it, whether you planned or not this "baby" you are aborting which it's not too good, because you are hurting yourself and killing a live.

xapathyxrebornx agony auntAlthough others have suggested the morning after pill i dont think it would work by now at this point.

I'm sorry but you have to wait at least three weeks and even then the result wont be accurate, I do suggest you wait until your next period is due and if its late then get a test adn find out. If you really cant wait then in three weeks get an early response test and a normal test they should give an answer but it wont be 100% reliable.

Oblivia agony auntYes, you have to wait until your next period is supposed to come for the home tests to work. Or at least to give a reliable answer. If you take it now and it says you are not pregnant you can still be, so it won't ease your worries one bit anyway, save it till later.

I say as birdynumnums, go NOW to a night open pharmacy or clinic and get the morning after pill, it works up to 72 hours, you still have time.

Best wishes!

A female reader, Landie South Africa +, writes (14 January 2008):

Landie agony auntYou can take a home pregnancy test 2 weeks after you had sex. That is not always 100% effective. The most effective way is a blood test which I think you can take at the same time

good luck

A female reader, anonymous, writes (14 January 2008):

A over the counter test will show a positive result 15-21 days after conception. So there is no way it would show up so soon. Wait 2 weeks from the time you had sex. It takes like 2-3 days for the sperm to even make it up to the egg to fertilize the egg. You could have gone to the pharmacy and bought the "morning after pill" that prevents pregnancy for up to 72 hours after having unprotected sex.

These days you can actually check almost straight away, go to a pharmacy they will direct you accordingly. Good luck
