We have the same thing here in the UK just called the morning after pill.
Basically it only works within 72 hours after having unprotected sex, and with each 24 hours that pass the chances of it working are reduced significantly. So if you have unprotected sex but take the Plan B pill immediately, it will be far more effective than if it is taken 70 hours after having unprotected sex.
It is NOT contraception or to be used frequently, it is only to be used in an emergency i.e. when your usual method of contraception has failed. It is not a form of birth control, and I must stress it should only be used as a last resort when it is a true emergency. This website should help you http://www.planb.ca/how.html
If you are ever thinking of having sex ALWAYS use 2 forms of contraception - condoms to prevent STD's and a form of birth control, like the pill, to prevent pregnancy. If you use both methods then the chances of you getting pregnant or any diseases are incredibly small. If you only use 1 method of contraception then there are more risks. If you only use birth control, you could catch a disease (they do not offer ANY protection against STD's). If you only use a condom, there is always the possibility it may break or be put on incorrectly and something can go wrong so you end up pregnant.
Try and avoid ever using the Plan B pill if you can - it is for emergencies only.
I hope this helps and good luck!

It is not meant as a normal birth control regimen. It should NEVER be used as so. It's high in vitamin C so that it may kill any potential for a baby. It also resets your ovulation cycle. You get your period within days of taking it.
Taking plan B made me feel like I was having an abortion. I felt horrible taking it, and I still kind of do. Even though I was 16.
I recommend sticking to birth control and condom. If you can't get birth control without your parents' permission, ask for it. I asked my mother about birth control before I had sex because I felt it'd show my mother my maturity and that I was not having sex to just do it. I wanted to be safe about it in case it happened (I had a long-term boyfriend at the time). She respected me, and didn't like the fact that I was thinking about having sex, but she took me to get birth control within the next couple weeks because she respected that I wanted to take care of myself.
So talk to your parents about it too when you feel like you're ready. If you find the right guy, he'll be willing to wait for the gynecologist appointment and enough time (1 week) for the pill to kick in to have sex with you. :) Good luck.
