How does the morning after pill work? Should I trust it? How do you calculate your fertile period?

On the night of Valentine's day, I noticed that the condom we were using had split. We stopped having sex, and changed the condom.

The next day (yesterday) I went and took the morning after pill, but I'm not sure how it could ever stop me being pregnant. He told me he definitely ejaculated, and now I'm so worried. Is there a good change of me becoming pregnant?

Also, at which part of your cycle are you most likely to become pregnant?

Thankyou :]

A female reader, anonymous, writes (24 February 2008):

The emergency contraceptive/morning-after pill has three possible ways in which it can work (as does the regular birth control pill):

-Ovulation is inhibited, meaning the egg will not be released;

-The normal menstrual cycle is altered, delaying ovulation; or

-It can irritate the lining of the uterus so that if the first and second actions fail, and the woman does become pregnant, the human being created will die before he or she can actually attach to the lining of the uterus.

In other words, if the third action occurs, her body rejects the living human embryo, and the child will die. This result is a chemical abortion. (Abortion is an act of direct killing that takes the life of a living preborn human being—a life that begins at fertilization.)

I believe that part of the question was "How does it work?" And so I answered. If you look at this site http://www.pfli.org/faq_oc.html which is a credible medical article, not the packet of the pill or a web site promoting the pill, it will tell you the truth about how it works. I'm sorry I waited so long to look at this post again; I know that means that no one will ever read this thing. And no, I didn't say that because of my religion, I don't know how you people could think so stereotypically of me. It is medical truth. To over simplify the article, the pill prevents the progress of pregnancy after it has begun at conception and is therefore an abortifacient, not a contraceptive. Read the article and you will understand this point. This has nothing to do with my religion, just the difference between truth and ignorance, thats it. Thats all I wish you people to know is truth even if it is not what you want to hear. Like it matters anyway. I'm sure no one will read this answer nor that article. But for the sake of it I'll ask you female reader aged 16-17, what do you think?

A reader, anonymous, writes (18 February 2008):

I totally agree with Mandy7. Religious beliefs are like sexual orientation. It doesn't matter what your own personal beliefs are, as long as you don't try to push them on everyone else. If what others do doesn't hurt you, then it is really none of your business. Sometimes the person asking the question wants help with a conflict between their religious beliefs and their situation or what they feel in their heart. In those cases, it is totally appropriate to discuss religious beliefs.

It is difficult to keep ones own beliefs private when in discussion with a close friend or partner, but it should not be difficult on an anonymous forum where the person is asking for help. They are already troubled. Why do some people have to try to make them feel worse instead of helping.

This is verified as being by the original poster of the question

I read on the packet of the actual pill that it doesn't cause a miscarriage - it doesn't work if you're already pregnant. It stated that..

A male reader, xylplxym United States +, writes (17 February 2008):

Um actually mandy7, the pill does cause miscarrage (or more acurrately an abortion) if you are pregnant first. Since it is a day after pill, which do you think happened first?

It's disappointing that you all failed to mention the increased risk of getting STDs when taking the pill. Or should I assume that is a given now and not worth mentioning? I don't know so I mentioned it anyway.

Not that you will choose to do what I suggest, but if you are so worried about not getting pregnant, don't have sex. Because guess what? One of the intended purposes of sex is the creation of new life not your or your partner's satisfaction. (fyi this is from the Catholic perspective so feel free to choose not to agree with this) And if you don't believe me about the increased STD risk because I didn't reference a web site, just look it up your self on the internet; more than enough websites will say the same thing.

Laura1318 agony auntCalculating your most fertile period.

The sperm can live for 5 days inside your fallopian tubes. The guys must be there first and waiting for the gal to come.

5 days before and 5 days after , from the onset of your period is the most fertile period.Your most dangerous period if you don't want to get pregnant.

hlskitten agony auntHi

Yeh you are better off going to the docs really in the future. Its soooooo dear in the chemists! I think i paid 25 quid!

I have used it twice in the past, the first time was the older ones that you had to take 2 of 12 hours apart, but the next time was the newer pill and only had to take 1. I didnt get any sickness and didnt even know i had taken it health wise. The newer ones now (Levonelle) are even less likely to make you sick apparently. But you can be pretty certain you wont get pregnant now. Especially when you took it so soon after. I think i was on day 2 after the event when i took it.

Hi Hunny

The morning after pill prevents ovulation it does not cause a miscariage, The quicker you take it the better the chances of it working, Although the first 72hrs are the most important you can get pills that can work up to 120hrs hunny but the quicker the better. They can cause sickness and vomiting and if this does happen you need to go back to your doc or drug store, I would personally recomend the doctor sweetheart, Im sending you a link on your cycle and you can read up all you need to know I hope it all works out ok hunny
