First of all, I'm not thinking of popping the question, at least yet, just in case you get that impression from my question lol.I'm just curous as to how you find out your partners ring size when it comes to buying an engagement ring without giving the game away? Been one of those simple questions that's bugged me for years. Short and sweet question, but thank you for reading and thank you in advance for any replies you give. Reply to this Question Share |

when passing a jeweller joke about buying her a ring and get her to try one on then return and ask what size the ring was! If she freaks out at the idea of even trying on a ring then prob best wait if she dont then bingo!

I just asked mine early on in the relationship (at the time we were talking about a promise ring) and made a note for later. Some people ask a girl's friends (who always seem to know these things). Barring that, walk around the mall with her and pass by the jewelry and see how casually you can ask about her favorite gems, styles, ring size, bracelet and neckless preferences, etc.

There are a few options for you men when you propose:
1. Easiest option (but less romantic) - no ring. You can still get down on one knee, and maybe compensate for the lack of ring with an extra special proposal, and having no ring would not be a big deal. It would be cute to have a few brochures with you so once she has (hopefully!) said yes, you could whip out a few lovely brochures (Boodles, Tiffany's, Cartier...etc. Even if you cant afford them, they are gorgeous brochures and nice to look through for ideas) so you can start looking for what she likes and get her excited.
2. Good in-between wrong size ring/no ring option. Buy the diamond but dont get it set - this is becoming increasingly popular. Buy the stone in its original form and then you will still have something shiny in a box to propose with, but you will get it made to measure with her design, getting her involved in the process too.
3. Another good in-between option - just buy the ring in a standard size and then get it adjusted after you have proposed. Chances are it wont fit perfectly but it does not take too long for the jeweller to adjust it, and they should be happy to let you have the ring and then adjust it later.
4. Best option - does she wear any rings? If she does, look at what finger she has it on now, and if it is the 3rd finger on the right (like the ring finger on the left) then you have the perfect size! You will have to be sneaky and measure it against a size guide (google 'ring size guide' and lots of results come up) but you should be able to do this when she takes it off and isnt in the same room. Even if it is a ring she wears on a different finger, e.g. middle finger - just look at the size of that against a size guide and going with one size down would be a good guess. If you can get any of her ring sizes for any finger then just take this info into a good jeweller and they will be able to make a pretty accurate guess.
I hope this helps and good luck!
