A female Australia age 36-40, *essie Jay writes:

Hi, I'm studying events management, and a group of girls in my class are manageing a large event for our final semester of studies.

We need to come up with a name for the group and we are deciding between Zap Events or Vibrant Events. The majority of us chose Vibrant events but one particular member of the group is very pationate about the name Zap Events and wont except anything else.

My first question is what do you think about each of the names?/Which one would you choose? The next is - how do you deal with one member of a group who just wont give or nudge?

O Connor agony aunti think you made the right choice with vibrant events. i study event management myself, and zap events sounds harsh, impersonal and aggressive. it sounds like there is no personal touch to the event itself and that its quick and then you're out of there. vibrant events sounds friendly, fun, exciting and inventive. it suggest colour, imagination and confidence to the client - which is obviously wat you want. zap events is more cocky and sharp.

i think that you need to talk to this girl and explain that you voted fairly and the majority rules. if she is ever going to do business she needs to learn to compromise and learn that she isnt always going to be happy with every aspect of the job. if she cant accept this, then you all need to move on and try not to focus on this too much - she will eventually give up the fight and move on herself.

by the way good luck with the event!! and its a great name stick to it, email me and let me know how you get on! hope this helps

Well clearly she thinks she in the boss. You just have to confront her, and you really cant back down. This is a problem you will have in the work world ALL the time. There is always one lady or man who doesn't like the finishing product that feels they need to add to it. Just say whatever the majority votes for thats what it is and be done with it. I think you girls are being a little to affriad of her. Just say listen, we are going to name the event... and do it! She'll respect you more for standing your ground and will probably prevent future problems with her. Vibrant Events is better.

zap sounds aggressive but exciting while vibrant sounds appealing and friendly but less memorable.

as for bossy people you find them everywhere and learn to not clash with them, but befriend and manipulate them which is more effective.

Friday agony auntPut it to a vote! It's the group as a whole making the decision and that way she won't feel alienated or personally insulted. Have everyone write down on a piece of paper what name they want and then tally them off on a chalk board or some other way.

AS far as Zap goes- it reminds me of a bug Zapper. Nothing says party planning the image of an electric light frying winged insects.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (24 July 2008):

zap reminds me of zapping bugs on one of those little electricity machines. Majority should rule. Take a vote, if it's just her raising her hand for "Zap Events" then tough. Be fair, be democratic, let her vote for her name and if no one else agrees with her you can't say you didn't give everyone the opportunity to be fair. One person can't decide, you need to let the group as a whole do that.

Fiona xxx agony auntZap events possibly reminds me of Lazar Quest or some shooting activity or gaming related.

Vibrant perhaps covers more and I guess you have to go with the majority. Vibrant perhaps suggests more about the personality and fun. Have you got the word 'Young' in there? And say it's a majority decision nothing personal etc.

Fiona.
