How do I not look like a fool in front of new co-wokers?

Hi everyone,

Just a question regarding work-related relationships (sort of?).

Anyways, I recently started working at a prestigious investment firm in an entry-level position (before this, I've never worked in an office, just mostly blue-collar jobs). Given that it's winter, and that I'm in Canada, it's not ideal to travel to work in a suit and dress shoes. Most of my colleagues/bosses do however because they all drive to work; I, on the other hand, rely on public transport (live in the suburbs and have to commute to the downtown core using buses, subways etc.).

I tried going to work one morning in a suit and overcoat and practically ruined my pants and shoes with the snow.

So the next day I wore some of my 'street clothes' (jeans and winter shoes with my suits' blazer, dress shirt, tie) and packed my suits' pants and shoes in a small luggage trolley case to get to work. My idea was to just slip in to the washrooms, get fully dressed there, and then after work change again.

Well when I got to work it was as if I had something on my face - got a few oddball looks from some of the senior staff (FYI, i was wearing decent jeans, nothing with rips and tears in them). I joked with one of the secretaries about 'having to get changed' to try and divert attention and she kinda laughed it off like 'whatever', but by the way some of the other people looked at me 'getting changed at work' it's as if I crossed the line (haven't read anything about dress-code or anything in the firm handbook, just most people are dressed professionally and look 'polished').

Did I 'break' some unwritten code of office etiquette?

I don't understand how else to get to work and look presentable without packing my clothes. Am I missing something here?

How do most people who work in office buildings get to work, specifically in the winter?

Any other tips to not look like a fool in front of my new coworkers?

Thanks!

Confused Canadian

yea the weather plays a bit of an obstacle . Try to get in a bit more early so that you Dont run into your co workers. Rehab they thought u went going to change and that what you were wearing would be your wrk cloths .

So_Very_Confused agony auntI often wear winter boots that I can tuck my pants into when I wear pants... but to be honest I find skirts easier in the wetter weather...

also I often wear flats to walk from the car to the desk...

in addition I do not think you are doing anything wrong and maybe you are imagining the looks?
