Other people can often come up with things you would never normally have thought of. Also, look at magazines and find models who have similar colouring to you, hair colour, skin colour and make note of the colours they are wearing.

Hey sweetness,
I suggest going into a store that you like the clothes in and asking a sales associate, "hey - I'm really new at this. I kind of want to try some colors, but I don't know what would look best on me. What do you think?". Or bring a friend, or something to give you some opinions.
You won't know until you try. Bring a little bit o' everything into a dressing room and experiment!!
Sometimes, the best thing to do with neutrals is to dress them up with a bright accent (colorful jewelry, a purse, some shoes). But, sometimes wearing a bright pink shirt can feel pretty fun too.
My Mother always told me that whatever colors you're drawn to, you'll look good in. I'm not so sure that this is entirely accurate, but it convinced me to try out wearing green and guess what? Green is SO MY COLOR! I would've never guessed to look at it, but who knew? Experimentation wins again.
Enjoy and HAVE FUN! Make it a girls shopping day - objective: COLORS!

I think a lot depends on hair and skin color. My sister is a blonde and tan and looks great in black, not in all black but a nice black shirt. White, orange, or anything bright also looks good on her. I am not tan and have a somewhat dark shade of brown hair. Whites and other bright colors drain me and look terrible. Brown and maroon are my favorites and I have recieved compliments in those. Try on different colors in a fitting room. You will be able to see which ones "pop" for you. Maybe bring a friend, an honest one, and have her tell you what she thinks. Really you can tell what looks good and what you like. Not knowing your hair color or skin tone I can't give you an idea. Good luck though !

Wear what makes you feel comfortable, NOT what other people tell you suits you.

I went through the same thing as you. I never really wore colours. But you've just got to start trying different things. Maybe even a colour scarf can brighten up a whole outfit and change it, and then progress to tops if you feel more confident. It's just trial and error. So try things before you buy them, and if you like them, go for it!

I pretty much stick to blacks and neutral colors too, but that's because my hair is neon yellow and everything pretty much clashes with it. Therefore, Most of the color in my wardrobe lies in belts and bags and accessories. Assuming you don't have some outlandish hair like me, it helps to consider your skin tone. For example, if you're pale as hell, you might want to think twice before trying to sport fire-engine red. Look at some websites and chick magazines and you'll find the "rules" for what skin tone works best with what color. Just remember, they're only guidelines... do what feels right.
