One position you can try to prevent gagging is to have him lay on his back, and you positioned to the side (i.e. basically you're resting your cheek on his stomach).
You can also use your hand as well which will give him the same feeling of going deep - think of it like holding a microphone to begin with, and sliding your hand up & down to get things going, as well as using your mouth. What will happen is that you're hand will become lubricated by the spit from your mouth so that, even if you can't get down to the base with your mouth, it'll still feel pretty good for him.

But the previous post is right. You dont have to deep throat to make your guy happy. Actually you can simulate a deep throat by going halfway, and using your hands the rest of the length. I personally prefer the combination of hand and throat myself, its more stimulating.

 What you are talking about (going all the way down) is known as deepthroating and is really unneccesary for sexual pleasure. Some guys like it, but it is more of a psychological turn on that you would do that, rather than a physiological stimulus. Most guys really dont care and it doesnt add much to the encounter. Concentrate instead on giving him pleasure and I think you will be right on.
