I am an American female and I've recently began dating a man from Saudi Arabia. I don't know if this is a cultural thing or a personal thing, but he does not wear deodorant and I am wondering how I might get him to start? He doesn't identify with a religion so it isn't a moral issue--just a touchy topic that I'd be concerned to approach anyone about! Any info on Saudi norms on this matter is also appreciated.

In addition to my previous post. My belief that he would have no problem identifying areas he thought you needed to improve is not the reason I think you should be honest with him. I only point that out to relieve you of guilt thus making it easier for you to say something.

My advice is to just come right out and say it. He would have no problem informing you of any improvements he thought you needed to make.

You can do it casually, and courtesously. The shorter that conversation is, the better.

The Realist agony auntYou could buy him some sort of colonge as a present and then by you all of a sudden telling him that he smells so good. This may get him to start thinking about his smell more often and want to do something about it.

A female reader, IAMDONE United States +, writes (15 May 2011):

I work in the Casino Industry and lots of employees I work with are from foreign countries and I share the same problem that you have expressed about them wearing deodorant.

The stintch is very offensive and the air when they leave smells terrible for minutes. I can not believe the odor that lingers.

It is very difficult to tell someone that they have an offensive odor. It is probably a topic that will hurt his feelings no matter how it is discussed.

I would gently tell him that you find his body ofor offfensive because he does not wear deodorant. Tell him that in America it is a custom that people shower at least once a day and use deodorant, perfume, cologne, and body sprays to make their scent pleasant for all they are around. There is no easy way to tell someone this but you have to do it if you do not want to be offended by his body odor.

Just remember to be gentle and soft spoken!
