It's possible reason you feel the need to "help" him is you actually enjoy it. That is your way of continuing the contact. I'm sure on some level you enjoy the flattery. If you didn't want it, you'd just ignore it. Why is this your obligation?

You can talk and reason with him and if that fail, then there is nothing more you can do.We cannot stop people from loving us .
If your life is not threatened in any way , just leave him alone until he grows out of his infatuations or he finds another target.

You have to be cruel to be kind, cut off all contact. If you know a friend of his that you can trust, mention in confidence that you are worried about him. Then they should keep an eye on him and look after him.
