This should show her that you're geuinely interested in her she'll probably act on her feelings if she feels the same. Although a little more info needed, do you talk to her a lot? or is she a close friend? it's a bit hard to say when i dont know your relationship status with her. However the above advice applies to any girl. And if you're worried about rejection because you're new to chatting up girls, just think that there's a first time for everything, and first times r usually weird, so don't let that destroy your confidence x
Maybe u could start with small talk if you're shy, but use other useful methods of showing her u like her, like pleasant guestures: smiling and catch her eye a lot. If she doesnt feel the same it can't be helped, but trust me, it's much better to show her how u feel and waiting for her response rather than not ever letting her know. I've made that mistake so many times because i used to be really shy as well. If u think she likes you thou, even more reason to go for it:)
About the bad experiences, they can haunt you forever and affect you so much, but whether it's a death or parent divorse or whatever it is, u have to think to yourself that after all the suffering u deserve a bit of happiness, and although you might not get over the things, you could end up feeling a whole lot better if the girl feels the same way xx

This helps to know your fears. Also is this person showing signs of liking you?
Best way of showing a person you like them is to be positive, smile, be interested in them but not that much that it is false looking. See what reaction you get, does she smile back, linger near you, ask you things?
If so, then things may progress further as you feel comfortable with each other, a little closer each time is OK if you feel shy. That can be appealing to some girls so it would only put off the ones who don't fit with you anyway. Do you know her well enough to like who she is, or do you just like your forst impression of her, there is a big difference and a good reason not to jump too soon if you have been hurt before.
