How can I survive living with these "mates"?

Question - (14 October 2010) 2 Answers - (Newest, 16 October 2010)
A female Australia age 41-50, anonymous writes:

I'm currently living in halls of residence for university and already some of my flatmates are being imature.

Basically, some of them think that playing pranks is funny. Especially playing with our power switches and turning bedroom lights out (now I keep a lamp on so when they do this, I still have light in my room). Only the other day, they barricaded myself and another flatmate in our rooms by placing the chairs and sofas outside our front doors.

Ok, it was amusing first time round, but when it happens nearly everyday and when I'm trying to study its now ridiculous and I don't see the funny side to it. So now I just ignore it and stay in my room. Its uncomfortable and their immature behaviour is upsetting to be honest.

Any ideas on what I can do to survive living with them for the rest of the academic year?

Thanks

I haven't lived in a dorm situation before but have lived in many shared living scenarios with flatmates. If they did these things we would of kicked them out of the flat, without returning the bond and with no apologies. If you can't feel safe in your own home, then there is something seriously wrong with the living arrangements. I recommend contacting security, a student mentor or worse case scenario relocating you so you can get on with your studies, life and peaceful sleep.
